FAQ

All Your Orthodontic Questions, Answered

1. At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early assessments help identify potential bite or alignment issues and can sometimes prevent more extensive treatment later. Dr. Augusta welcomes children as young as 5!

2. How do I know if my teen or adult needs braces or aligners?

Signs include crooked or crowded teeth, gaps or spaces, bite problems, or jaw discomfort. We offer complementary consultations for patients of all ages and can recommend the best treatment, whether it’s braces, clear aligners, appliances, or other orthodontic solutions.

3. What types of braces or aligners do you offer?

We provide traditional metal braces with self-ligating brackets, aesthetic clear (ceramic) braces, and clear aligners for kids, teens, and adults. Each treatment option is tailored to fit your lifestyle and smile goals.

4. How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?

Treatment length varies depending on age, bite complexity, and chosen appliance and treatment. Most patients complete treatment in 12–24 months, though some clear aligner plans or treatments may be shorter. It also depends if you will require Phase I and Phase II treatment. More complex treatment plans may take longer than the 12-24 month average.

5. Are braces or aligners painful?

Most patients experience mild discomfort or pressure for a few days after adjustments or starting a new aligner, but it’s usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Modern self-ligating braces and clear aligners are designed for comfort and efficient tooth movement.

6. Can my child still play sports or musical instruments with braces?

Absolutely! We recommend mouthguards for contact sports, which can be custom-fit to accommodate braces. Musical instruments can typically be played without issue, though some adjustments may be needed initially.

7. How often will my child or I need to come in for appointments?

Appointments usually occur every 4–8 weeks for braces and every 6–10 weeks for clear aligners. These visits allow us to track progress, make adjustments, and ensure treatment stays on schedule.

8. Do you accept insurance, and what financing options are available?

Yes! We are in-network with Delta Dental and several Medicaid plans, including Medica, Blue Plus, South Country, and Hennepin Health. If you have a different insurance plan, our team is happy to help complete and submit forms on your behalf. We also offer flexible payment plans and financing options to help make orthodontic care manageable for every family.
